Like masters of classical architecture, early violin and cello makers designed their instruments using simple geometric rules. Computer science professor Harry Mairson is bringing their craft into the digital age, writing software that mimics the design techniques old-world luthiers used and making CT scans of historical instruments available to researchers worldwide.
